The Rise of Personalized Men’s Rings

This beautiful two tone white and yellow gold Custom Men’s Wedding Band features gypsy-set diamonds and emeralds. We made this for one of our favorite grooms, Cordell, to match his beautiful wife’s beautiful engagement ring (a gorgeous emerald set in yellow prongs in a white gold double halo setting). This ring echoes the same materials in a much more masculine design.
Grooms once chose between yellow gold wedding bands and, well, yellow gold wedding bands. At Secrete Fine Jewelry in Dupont Circle, we joke that the 4mm half round wedding band in yellow gold is the “Dad Ring,” because 90% of our grooms say, “Hey, my dad has that ring!” Those days of every man wearing the same wedding ring are gone. Couples now see custom men’s wedding bands as a chance to share personal style and sentimental details. The trend has been steadily rising because men want rings that feel like them, not just a uniform for all married men. Designing custom men’s wedding bands lets you pick every element, from metal to engraving. It is jewelry you will enjoy looking at every single day.
“The groom’s ring is not just limited to a plain golden band—a wide range of styles and metals exist… Designs can vary with different metallic blends, intricate textures, diamond-encrusted details, and classic dome profiles.”

Textures and Metals: Create Subtle Visual Interest

The hammered finish of this wide yellow gold wedding band gives it a rough hewn feel to balance out the sparkle of the diamonds. We love the asymmetrical placement of the diamonds.
A texture can transform even the simplest ring. Try brushed, polished, hammered, sand-blasted, ice, or Florentine finishes. The best part? Most finishes can change later. If twenty years from now, the brushed finish just really feels like a bygone trend, we can polish it off. Easy as that.

Traditional metals for men’s wedding bands include gold (white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold) or platinum. Sometimes silver is also used as a budget friendly option, but it is softer than gold and may not be appropriate for all designs or lifestyles.
Traditional metals stay popular for a reason. White, yellow, and rose gold as well as platinum resist wear, stay friendly to sensitive skin, and can resize when life happens. Platinum is the most hypoallergenic metal, making it a great choice for people with sensitive skin. 18k yellow and rose gold can also be very hypoallergenic.
White gold contains a small amount of nickel, however, and even though it’s plated with rhodium which is hypoallergenic, the rhodium can wear off over time. If you have nickel sensitivity (for example, if you break out from stainless steel watches), you may want to avoid white gold and choose platinum instead.
Contemporary metals such as tungsten, titanium, or cobalt may be on trend now, but they can cause major issues later. Most contemporary metals cannot be resized, or the cost to resize them can be many times more than their original price. Our hands change size over the years. We grow in our love and in our waistbands. Arthritis comes for the best of us. One Secrete employee shared, “After 60 years of marriage and arthritis, my grandmother’s knuckles looked like the gnarled roots of a beech tree. Mr. Soo was able to cut her ring in half and add a hinge, almost like a bangle, so she could get the ring over her knuckles without it looking like a hula hoop at the base of her finger.” We hope all our couples’ marriages last for decades, and we want your wedding rings to be able to grow with you, too.
Even worse than their issues with resizing, many contemporary metal bands cannot be removed by emergency medics. At Secrete Fine Jewelry, we have sawed many wedding rings off swollen fingers. Swelling from injury, illness, or medication can turn a tight band from uncomfortable into an emergency. The ER can cut the gold or platinum ring off easy-peasy. The contemporary metal rings may require equipment they just don’t have. Skip the risk.
If you love the gunmetal gray look of a tungsten band, ask us to apply dark rhodium to white gold or platinum. There are ways to achieve contemporary looks with traditional precious metals.
Working with a budget? Consider sterling silver or even 10k gold. While sterling silver is a little too soft for a daily wear in a thin band, a thicker silver mens wedding band handles daily wear and still feels heirloom-worthy.
Stones That Stand Out for Custom Men’s Wedding Bands

Secrète Fine Jewelry created this beautiful stackable set of diamond and sapphire wedding bands for a groom last year. The channel setting keeps the edges sleek and protected while the stones shine.
Diamonds remain the first choice for custom men’s wedding bands because of their hardness and everyday wearability. White diamonds give a clean, neutral look, while fancy colors such as yellow or black add contrast without sacrificing durability.
Sapphires and rubies rank just below diamond on the Mohs scale, so they hold up well in daily use. Deep blue sapphires, vivid rubies, and yellow, teal, or green sapphire varieties introduce rich color while keeping the band durable.
At Secrete we often use channel settings or tension settings for men’s bands. Both styles keep the profile streamlined and complement the bold proportions many clients prefer. However any setting style can work, depending on the overall design.
Stone shape guides the overall design. Angular baguette and princess cuts provide a crisp, modern line. Round brilliants deliver maximum light return and suit a more traditional look. Some grooms mirror a partner’s ring by matching stone shape or color for visual continuity.
Many clients customize further with his and hers birthstones, set inside the ring, as a special alternative to name engravings. Because every ring is built to order, stone type, size, and arrangement can be adjusted to match aesthetic goals, comfort, and budget.

We made this beautiful white gold wedding band featuring the groom’s favorite stone, lapis lazuli, in a simple bezel setting.
Metal Details and Engraving: Transforming Metal into Personal Stories

This his-and-hers set of wedding bands was custom created at Secrète Fine Jewelry in the Art Deco style. One of our bridal designers pulled the idea for the fan-shaped engravings from a historic photo of Art Deco Architectrual details, and our in-house engraver carefully translated the design onto these beautiful rings.
Surface details can transform simple metal into a great design. One of our favorite designs uses a continuous Celtic knot to wrap the band in an endless pattern, symbolizing eternal love. The motif also honors Irish hand fasting, a wedding ritual where a ribbon ties the couple’s hands, inspiring the phrase “tying the knot.”
The options are endless. Classic milgrain edges lend vintage charm through tiny, even beads. Slim gold braids along the rim add contrast and richness. Full-surface line engraving offers texture you can feel every time your thumb slides across the band, and it can be classical, Art Deco, contemporary, or abstract. Some people even choose bible verses like “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine,” from the Song of Solomon.
Inside a men’s wedding band, it’s traditional to add personal inscriptions. Wedding dates, geographic coordinates, handwritten notes, or even a small cartoon skull—if it matters to you, it belongs inside the ring.

These beautiful wedding bands were created with engraved yellow gold and flush-set diamons within a platinum edge. The his and hers set shows how much personality metalwork details can add.
Custom Heirloom Ring Redesign: Honoring the Past, Wearing the Present

The Secrète Fine Jewelry workshop can expertly redesign your family heirlooms while preserving what you love most about them.
If you have a family heirloom ring, it might hold sentimental value, but its style may feel dated or just wrong for you. A custom heirloom wedding band redesign can preserve sentiment while modernizing form. One client brought a thin gold ring from his grandfather. We added platinum edges, turning it into a wider two-tone band and preserving the original engraving inside.
Another groom had a family heirloom band that was thin and beat up, but it had the initials of his parents, grandparents, and great grandparents inside. We encased the worn ring inside a new platinum shell. The vintage gold still touched his skin and the engravings were still preserved, but the outside looked fresh and solid.
In other cases, we can melt inherited jewelry and reuse the gold or platinum in a brand-new casting. Sometimes, when a loved one has passed away, reusing their jewelry for a custom wedding band can be a moving way of including them in the wedding ceremony and your every day life. Whether it’s a grandmother’s earrings or a parent’s class ring or gold chain, we can transform something special to your family into the ring you’ll wear every day.
